Worth Leaving For This Weekend: October 9–11 in Southwest Florida
October is finally starting to act like October in Southwest Florida.
Well, sort of.
We're still sweating, but now we're doing it while surrounded by pumpkins and Halloween decorations. Progress. 😂
This weekend, we've got haunted trails, a free movie along the Caloosahatchee, a circus performance, a botanical shopping adventure, and an actual mermaid auction.
Yes. Mermaids.
And because I know nobody wants to spend $200 just to leave the house, most of this week's picks are free or $25 and under.
Let's find something worth putting on pants for.
🎬 FRIDAY: Free Movies on the River
Palm City Cinema: Reels on the River
📍 Centennial Park, 2000 W. First Street, Fort Myers
📅 Friday, October 9
⏰ 6:30 PM
💰 FREE
This is a pretty fantastic way to start the weekend.
Fort Myers is bringing back its outdoor movie series with a screening of Minions & Monsters at Centennial Park.
But here's what makes this one different.
The movie screen is on a boat!
You can watch from the park or even from your own boat.
Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and whatever else makes an outdoor movie night comfortable.
Food trucks will also be available.
Just leave the alcohol and glass containers at home.
Why it's worth leaving for: A waterfront movie night that costs absolutely nothing.
And honestly, a movie screen floating on the river is a little more interesting than sitting on your couch.
🐾 FRIDAY: Yappy Hour Gets Spooky
Yappy Hour: Spooky Edition
📍 Bell Tower, Fort Myers
📅 Friday, October 9
⏰ 6–8 PM
If your dog has a Halloween costume, this is its moment.
Bell Tower is hosting its October Yappy Hour with a spooky theme.
The monthly gathering brings dog lovers and their four-legged companions together for an evening of socializing, shopping and supporting the Gulf Coast Humane Society.
Participating businesses may also have special surprises for pets and their humans.
And yes, your dog will probably have a better social life than you by the end of the evening.
Why it's worth leaving for: Dogs, Halloween vibes and an excuse to get out without leaving your favorite four-legged companion behind.
Check the event details for any special activities or fundraising opportunities.
👻 FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: Haunted Walk Returns
Haunted Walk: Face Your Fears
📍 Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium
3450 Ortiz Avenue, Fort Myers
📅 Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 9–11
⏰ 7:30–10:30 PM
💰 $20 advance admission, plus a small service fee
💰 $25 at the door
Now we're talking.
The Calusa Nature Center is transforming its nighttime trails into a Halloween experience designed to scare the absolute crap out of you.
Haunted Walk returns this weekend with its 2026 theme, Face Your Fears.
And this isn't just a haunted attraction.
It's also a fundraiser supporting the care of the Nature Center's resident animals.
So technically, getting scared is charitable.
You're welcome.
Important parking information: Due to limited parking and construction on Ortiz Avenue, off-site shuttle service will operate Friday and Saturday from 6:30–10:30 PM. Check the official Haunted Walk page for the shuttle location and directions.
Why it's worth leaving for: Halloween fun with an actual purpose.
Just don't volunteer to walk first.
🌺 SATURDAY & SUNDAY: Orchids, Cacti and Plants You Definitely Don't Need
O.C.T. Plant Sale & Workshops
📍 Edison & Ford Winter Estates
2350 McGregor Boulevard, Fort Myers
📅 Saturday and Sunday, October 10–11
⏰ 9 AM–4 PM
💰 FREE admission to the plant sale, orchid show and workshops
Plant people, this one's for you.
The Edison & Ford Winter Estates is hosting a weekend dedicated to orchids, cacti and tillandsias.
There will be plant vendors, an orchid show, food trucks and free educational workshops.
Saturday's workshops include orchid care, staghorn ferns, growing orchids from seed and repotting techniques.
Sunday features additional sessions on orchid mounting, Vandas, Hoyas and other plants.
And if you're the person who says, "I'm just looking," before coming home with six new plants...
We see you.
Important: The event and workshops are free, but admission to the museum, laboratory and riverside portions of the property requires a separate ticket.
Workshop seating is first-come, first-served.
Why it's worth leaving for: Something different, educational and free.
Although I cannot guarantee you'll leave without buying another plant.
🛍️ SATURDAY: Bonita Springs Farmers Market
Local Roots Farmers Market
📍 Promenade at Bonita Bay
26795 South Bay Drive, Bonita Springs
📅 Saturday, October 10
⏰ 8 AM–Noon
💰 FREE to browse
If you haven't visited the farmers market at the Promenade lately, October marks the return of its seasonal schedule.
You'll find fresh produce, flowers, baked goods, seafood, honey, prepared foods and a selection of local artists and makers.
This is one of those Saturday mornings that doesn't require an elaborate plan.
Grab coffee.
Walk around.
Buy something delicious.
Convince yourself that purchasing locally made baked goods counts as supporting the economy.
Because it does. 😏
Why it's worth leaving for: A relaxed Bonita Springs morning that can easily turn into breakfast or lunch.
🎪 SATURDAY: The Lemon-Lime Cabaret
A Circus Variety Show
📍 Citrus Circus Center
24850 Old 41 Road, Suite 23, Bonita Springs
📅 Saturday, October 10
🚪 Doors open at 5 PM
🎪 Show begins at 5:30 PM
💰 $25 per person
Okay, THIS is something different.
Bonita Springs has its very own circus arts center, and Saturday evening they're hosting The Lemon-Lime Cabaret.
Expect aerial performances, circus skills, acrobatics and a variety-show atmosphere.
The show is presented as an all-ages performance, so you don't need to run away and join the circus to appreciate it.
Although after watching people fly through the air, you may briefly consider it.
Why it's worth leaving for: Something you probably haven't done on a typical Southwest Florida Saturday night.
And at $25, it makes a fun alternative to another dinner reservation.
🧜♀️ SUNDAY: Adopt a Mermaid
Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce Fundraiser
📍 Eagles Nest Restaurant
10880 Stringfellow Road, Bokeelia
📅 Sunday, October 11
⏰ 4–7 PM
💰 Auction purchases and raffle participation optional; no general admission price is listed
I saved the weirdest one for last.
Because apparently Pine Island is auctioning off mermaids.
Twenty wooden mermaid artworks have been sponsored by local businesses and transformed by island artists.
On Sunday, they'll be auctioned to raise money supporting Pine Island businesses and the Calusa Land Trust.
There will also be live painting demonstrations, music by Madison Morris, raffle opportunities and a mermaid coloring area.
The auction begins at 5 PM, but the event starts at 4 PM so visitors can see the artwork beforehand.
And honestly?
This is the kind of wonderfully quirky local event that deserves more attention.
Why it's worth leaving for: Local art, island atmosphere and the opportunity to tell people you spent Sunday afternoon at a mermaid auction.
Try explaining that to your friends up north.
So, What Would I Actually Pick This Weekend?
If you're looking for something completely free, I'd start with Friday's movie at Centennial Park.
If you love Halloween, Haunted Walk is an easy choice.
If you're looking for something unusual, the circus show in Bonita Springs gets my vote.
And if you want to explore a little farther from home?
Go see what this mermaid auction is all about.
Because I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a story about buying a mermaid than another story about spending Saturday at Costco.

About Worth Leaving For
Every Thursday, I hunt down what's actually happening around Estero, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers and the surrounding Southwest Florida area.
Not every event makes the cut.
I'm looking for experiences that are interesting, affordable and genuinely worth getting out of the house for.
Because living in Southwest Florida should be about more than the house you bought.
It's about what you do once you live here.
