Worth Leaving For: Things to Do in Fort Myers This Weekend | Oct. 2–4

by Stephanie Barrett

Okay, Southwest Florida.

October understood the assignment. 👀

We've got Oktoberfest. Art Walk. A giant expanded farmers market. Live theater. Trop-rock on Fort Myers Beach. And a free waterfront concert to finish the weekend.

THIS is what I mean when I say season starts waking up in October.

And because nobody should spend Thursday night opening 37 event tabs trying to figure out what's actually happening, I did it for you.

Here are the things I think are genuinely Worth Leaving For this weekend, October 2–4.

This Weekend at a Glance

EVENT WHERE WHEN COST
🎨 Fort Myers Art Walk Downtown Fort Myers Fri. 5–9 PM FREE
🍺 Fort Myers Oktoberfest Downtown Fort Myers Fri.–Sun. FREE admission
🌴 ParrotPhest Fort Myers Beach Fri.–Sun. FREE live music
🥕 Expanded Fort Myers Farmers Market Downtown Fort Myers Sat. 9 AM–1 PM FREE admission
🎭 Dear Evan Hansen Bonita Springs Fri. & Sun. $15–$35 + fee
🎶 Wayward Souls at Bayside Veterans Park Fort Myers Beach Sun. 4–7 PM FREE

🎨 1. Fort Myers Art Walk

📍 Downtown Fort Myers River District — First & Hendry
📅 Friday, October 2 | 5–9 PM
💰 FREE

First Friday means Art Walk is back in downtown Fort Myers.

The historic streets close down while local and regional artists display and sell their work throughout the River District.

This month's Art Walk also includes a special exhibition by artist Brian Weaver, Unframed & Underground, with guest artist Lacy Kelly of Aerial Illusions.

Why It’s Worth Leaving For

Because you don't really need an itinerary.

Walk around.

Look at art.

Pop into somewhere for dinner or a drink.

Listen to music.

Buy something you absolutely did not leave home intending to buy.

That's a perfectly acceptable Friday night. 😂

Stephanie’s Local Tip

Don't make Art Walk your ONLY Friday-night plan.

Because there's something else happening downtown that makes this weekend particularly interesting...

🍺 2. Fort Myers Oktoberfest

📍 1811 Royal Palm Avenue, Downtown Fort Myers
📅 Friday, October 2 | 5–10 PM
📅 Saturday, October 3 | Noon–10 PM
📅 Sunday, October 4 | Noon–5 PM
💰 FREE admission

Okay, THIS is my big find of the week.

Fort Myers Oktoberfest is taking over the weekend with German food, house-brewed German beers, fresh pretzels, beer-hall music, stein-hoisting competitions and eating contests.

Saturday is the big day, with everything from a schnitzel-eating contest to pretzel and bratwurst contests.

And then Saturday night gets its own Oktoberfest After Dark: Y2K Edition from 10 PM–2 AM.

Because apparently we are combining Germany and the year 2000 now.

I support the chaos. 😂

Sunday shifts into Family Day/Kill the Kegs from noon–5 PM, including kids' pretzel-eating and stein-hoisting contests.

Why It’s Worth Leaving For

Admission is FREE.

There's also free parking available, the event is rain or shine with much of it covered, and there's enough going on that you can spend an hour there or turn it into your whole afternoon.

All ages are welcome until 8 PM; after 8 PM, it's 18+.

Stephanie’s Local Tip

Friday-night combo: Art Walk + Oktoberfest.

They're both downtown.

Do Art Walk first.

Then go eat a pretzel and watch grown adults compete to see who can hold a giant stein the longest.

That's a night. 😂

🌴 3. ParrotPhest Takes Over Fort Myers Beach

📍 Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers Beach
251 Crescent Street

📅 Friday–Sunday, October 2–4
💰 FREE live music throughout the weekend

Apparently Fort Myers Beach didn't get the memo that Island Hopper ended.

Because we're doing another music weekend. 😂

ParrotPhest is a Trop Rock weekend at Margaritaville with island-inspired live music happening throughout the resort.

Friday includes performers like Reggie Starrett, Rudy Cox, Monallo Band and Otis and The Beachcombers.

Saturday has music throughout the day, plus a Meet the Parrots appearance from Bird Gardens of Naples at 2:30 PM.

And Sunday starts with steel drums at 10 AM and keeps the music going into the evening.

Why It’s Worth Leaving For

This is probably the easiest event on the list to turn into an entire beach day.

Go to the beach.

Grab food.

Catch some music.

Walk around.

Stay for another performer.

And unlike a traditional concert, you aren't locked into one showtime.

Stephanie’s Local Tip

Check the music schedule before you leave.

Performers are playing at different Margaritaville locations throughout the weekend, so pick one or two you want to hear and build your day around those.

🥕 4. The Fort Myers Farmers Market Gets MUCH Bigger Saturday

📍 Downtown Fort Myers Culinary District
📅 Saturday, October 3 | 9 AM–1 PM
💰 FREE admission

Yes, we've included the farmers market before.

But this Saturday is different.

October 3 officially kicks off the market's expanded fall season.

The City of Fort Myers says the expanded market will have more than 70 returning and new vendors and a larger footprint through downtown.

There's even an opening-bell ceremony at 9 AM.

Expect fresh breads, baked goods, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, nuts, juices, spices, flowers, plants, clothing, jewelry and plenty more.

Why It’s Worth Leaving For

This is exactly what we talked about in Monday's blog.

October hits and season starts waking up.

The markets get bigger.

The events come back.

And suddenly Saturday morning has plans again.

Stephanie’s Local Tip

Go in the morning, then grab breakfast or lunch downtown.

And if you bought bread, flowers, cheese and jewelry when you only went for vegetables?

I'm not judging you.

I don't have that kind of authority. 😂

🎭 5. Dear Evan Hansen at Arts Bonita

📍 Hinman Auditorium at Arts Bonita
10150 Bonita Beach Road, Bonita Springs

📅 Friday, October 2 | 7 PM
📅 Sunday, October 4 | 2 PM & 7 PM
💰 $15–$35 + $4 ticketing fee

Here's the completely different option.

Arts Bonita Actors Theatre opens its production of the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen this weekend.

And I especially like having this one on the list because not everybody wants another outdoor festival.

Why It’s Worth Leaving For

It's indoors.

It's local theater.

Tickets start at just $15.

And you have both afternoon and evening options Sunday.

One important heads-up: this production is recommended for ages 13+ and includes mature themes, including bullying, depression, substance use and suicide.

Stephanie’s Local Tip

With rain chances hanging around this weekend, this is also my:

“Florida ruined my outdoor plan. Now what?”

option.

Keep it in your back pocket.

🎶 6. Sunday Waterfront Concert: Wayward Souls

📍 Bayside Veterans Park, Fort Myers Beach
📅 Sunday, October 4 | 4–7 PM
🎶 Wayward Souls
💰 FREE

We're finishing the weekend exactly where I like finishing weekends:

By the water.

Wayward Souls takes the stage Sunday afternoon at Bayside Veterans Park in the downtown district of Fort Myers Beach.

The park overlooks Matanzas Harbor and has an area for portable seating in front of the stage.

Why It’s Worth Leaving For

Free music.

Waterfront setting.

Sunday afternoon.

No complicated plan required.

Stephanie’s Local Tip

This is where I'd get strategic.

ParrotPhest is also happening Sunday.

So if the weather cooperates, head to Fort Myers Beach earlier, catch some ParrotPhest music, eat something, wander around and then finish at Bayside Veterans Park from 4–7.

One drive. Two events.

We love efficiency around here. 😂

☔ Before You Go

We're still in Florida's wet season, despite the calendar saying October.

The current National Weather Service forecast has temperatures around 90 degrees with showers and thunderstorms possible during the weekend, including Friday afternoon/evening.

So don't cancel your life.

Just do what Floridians do:

Check the radar before you leave.

Also remember that Oktoberfest says it's rain or shine and much of the event is covered, while Dear Evan Hansen gives you a solid indoor backup.

🏆 If I Were Picking Just ONE...

Fort Myers Oktoberfest.

This wasn't even difficult this week.

Free admission + three days + German food + pretzels + contests + beer-hall atmosphere + rain-or-shine setup?

That's Worth Leaving For.

But if you're going Friday?

I'd absolutely turn it into the Art Walk + Oktoberfest doubleheader.

Start on First Street.

Wander Art Walk.

Then head over to Oktoberfest.

That feels like the kind of local Friday night this whole series is supposed to uncover.

Living Here Is More Than Finding a House

This weekend is actually a perfect example of why I started doing these guides.

Friday night can be Art Walk and Oktoberfest.

Saturday morning can be the farmers market.

Sunday can be live music on Fort Myers Beach.

These are the little things that make a place feel like home instead of somewhere you happen to own a house.

So every Thursday, I dig through what's happening around our part of Southwest Florida and pull out what I think is genuinely Worth Leaving For.

And if you're trying to figure out where in Southwest Florida fits the way you actually want to live?

That's where I come in.
