Labor Day Weekend in Southwest Florida: What’s Actually Worth Leaving the House For

by Stephanie Barrett

Labor Day weekend is here, and if your big plan was to sit around asking, “So... what should we do?” I’ve got you.

From Estero and Bonita Springs to Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach, there are plenty of things happening around Southwest Florida this Labor Day weekend that are actually worth putting on real clothes and leaving the air conditioning for.

I did the digging so you don’t have to.

Here’s what’s Worth Leaving For this Labor Day weekend, September 4–7, 2026.

🎨 Art Walk | Downtown Fort Myers

Friday, September 4 | 5–9 PM | FREE

Start Labor Day weekend in the Fort Myers River District with the monthly Art Walk.

Downtown comes alive with local and regional artists, galleries, vendors and entertainment. This is one of those events where you don’t need much of a plan. Park, start walking, pop into whatever catches your attention and grab dinner or a drink along the way.

Why it’s worth leaving for: It’s free, there’s plenty to explore, and you can turn it into anything from a quick evening stroll to a full night downtown.

🌴 Jimmy Buffett Day | Fort Myers Beach

September 4–7 | 10 AM–10 PM | Open to the Public

If there were ever a weekend to embrace full Florida mode, this would be it.

Margaritaville Beach Resort Fort Myers Beach is celebrating Jimmy Buffett Day throughout Labor Day weekend with live music, island-inspired food, DJs, giveaways and special events.

And no, you don’t have to be staying at the resort. The celebration is open to the public.

Why it’s worth leaving for: Live music + Fort Myers Beach + Jimmy Buffett over Labor Day weekend. I’m not sure we could make this more Florida if we tried.

🌮 SWFL Taste of Latino Festival | Fort Myers

Saturday, September 5 | 12–5 PM | FREE

Head to Centennial Park in Downtown Fort Myers Saturday for the SWFL Taste of Latino Festival.

Expect Latin American food, music, art, culture and entertainment along the Caloosahatchee.

Admission is free, which leaves more room in the budget for the important part: trying the food.

Why it’s worth leaving for: If you want an actual festival atmosphere with food, music and plenty happening around you, this is one of my top picks of the weekend.

🎶 Bash on the Bay | Fort Myers Beach

September 5–7 | 10 AM–10 PM | Ticketed Event

If you want something that can turn into an entire Labor Day outing, Bash on the Bay is happening throughout the holiday weekend on Fort Myers Beach.

The three-day event includes live music, food, vendors, boating activities, contests, fishing tournaments and more, with performers including the Ben Allen Band and Jaquie Roar.

This one is ticketed, so check current ticket prices and availability before heading over.

Why it’s worth leaving for: This is the pick if you want a bigger Labor Day weekend experience rather than just popping into an event for an hour or two.

🏝️ Make a Fort Myers Beach Day Out of It

With Jimmy Buffett Day and Bash on the Bay happening during the same holiday weekend, this may be the weekend to stop saying, “We should go down to the beach sometime,” and actually do it.

Go earlier in the day, spend some time on the beach, grab lunch, wander around, and then stick around for the live music and festivities.

Just remember that parking and traffic on a holiday weekend are likely to be a little more... character building. 😂

Why it’s worth leaving for: You can combine the beach, food, live music and two Labor Day celebrations into one outing.

🌦️ One Very Florida Labor Day Reminder

It’s September in Southwest Florida.

Translation: heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms are all invited to Labor Day weekend whether we asked them to come or not.

For outdoor events, mornings and evenings are your friend. Check the radar before heading out, bring water and have an indoor backup plan if Mother Nature decides she has other ideas.

Because nothing says Florida quite like leaving your house under blue skies and arriving somewhere during a monsoon 20 minutes later.

💗 So, What’s Actually Worth Leaving For?

If I were planning the weekend, here’s how I’d do it:

Friday: Art Walk in Downtown Fort Myers, then head toward Fort Myers Beach for Jimmy Buffett Day if you want to keep the night going.

Saturday: Taste of Latino Festival in Downtown Fort Myers.

Saturday evening or Sunday: Make it a Fort Myers Beach day and check out the Jimmy Buffett festivities or Bash on the Bay.

There you go.

Labor Day weekend handled.

And if you like knowing what’s actually happening around here without digging through 47 Facebook event pages yourself, stick around.

I share my Worth Leaving For picks featuring things happening around Estero, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers and the surrounding Southwest Florida area because living here should be about more than knowing what your house is worth.

Although... I happen to know a little something about that too. 😉
