Worth Leaving For: Things to Do in Fort Myers This Weekend | Sept. 18–20
It’s Thursday, which means I’ve once again gone digging through Southwest Florida event calendars so you don't have to.
And this weekend?
We actually have options.
Live music downtown. A songwriter festival taking over Captiva. Pirates on Fort Myers Beach. Free Saturday-night music. And most of it won't cost you anything to get in.
Here’s what I think is actually Worth Leaving For this weekend.
This Weekend at a Glance
| EVENT | WHERE | WHEN | COST |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🎶 Fort Myers Music Walk | Downtown Fort Myers | Fri. 6–10 PM | FREE |
| 🎸 Island Hopper Songwriter Fest | Captiva Island | Fri.–Sun. | Most shows FREE |
| 🏴☠️ Pirate Fest | Fort Myers Beach | Sat. 11 AM–5 PM | FREE |
| 🍺 Sundown Concert Series | Fort Myers Brewing | Sat. 6–9 PM | FREE |
🎶 1. Fort Myers Music Walk
📍 Downtown Fort Myers River District
📅 Friday, September 18 | 6–10 PM
💰 FREE
This is one of those events that's easy to forget about until somebody reminds you and suddenly Friday night is handled.
Downtown Fort Myers' monthly Music Walk takes over the River District Friday night with local and regional musicians performing throughout downtown.
You'll hear everything from jazz and blues to rock, with different performers and participating venues each month.
And admission?
Free.
Why It’s Worth Leaving For: You don't have to commit to one restaurant, one band or even one plan. Wander downtown, listen to whatever sounds good, grab dinner or a drink and keep moving.
Stephanie’s Local Tip: Don't over-plan this one. Park, start walking First Street and see where the night takes you. That's kind of the point.
🎸 2. Island Hopper Songwriter Fest Kicks Off on Captiva
📍 Captiva Island
📅 Friday, September 18–Sunday, September 20
💰 The majority of performances are FREE
Okay.
THIS is my pick this week.
The 11th annual Island Hopper Songwriter Fest officially begins Friday, and the first weekend belongs to Captiva.
This isn't just random live music.
Songwriters perform at intimate island venues and tell the stories behind the music. The full festival runs September 18–27 and eventually moves through Cape Coral, downtown Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach — but Captiva gets opening weekend.
And there are a LOT of free shows.
Friday night alone has performances at places including RC Otter's, 'Tween Waters, The Green Flash, Jensen's Twin Palm Resort and Keylime Bistro.
The music continues throughout Saturday and Sunday.
Why It’s Worth Leaving For: Sitting somewhere on Captiva listening to the person who actually wrote the song tell you how it happened?
Yeah.
That's a Southwest Florida night.
Stephanie’s Local Tip: Do NOT just drive onto Captiva assuming you'll figure everything out when you arrive.
Download the Island Hopper app or look at the schedule first and choose a couple performances.
Even better: the festival is running a FREE hop-on/hop-off tram on Captiva Friday from 3–10 PM, Saturday from 1–10 PM and Sunday from 1–6 PM.
Use it.
🏴☠️ 3. Pirate Fest at Salty Sam's Marina
📍 Salty Sam's Marina, 2500 Main Street, Fort Myers Beach
📅 Saturday, September 19 | 11 AM–5 PM
💰 FREE admission + FREE parking
I realize I'm about to tell grown adults to consider spending Saturday dressed like pirates.
Stay with me. 😂
Saturday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and Salty Sam's Marina is bringing Pirate Fest back to Fort Myers Beach.
They're turning the marina into a pirate-themed waterfront event with live music, treasure hunts, games, craft vendors, themed food and drinks and activities around the pirate ship.
And yes, costumes are encouraged.
Why It’s Worth Leaving For: It's weird.
It's waterfront.
It's free.
And frankly, those are three excellent qualifications for this list.
Stephanie’s Local Tip: This could easily become lunch + Pirate Fest + a little Fort Myers Beach wandering instead of treating the festival as your entire day.
Also, if you own a pirate hat and don't wear it on International Talk Like a Pirate Day, when exactly ARE you planning to use it?
🍺 4. Sundown Concert Series at Fort Myers Brewing
📍 Fort Myers Brewing Company, 12811 Commerce Lakes Drive #28
📅 Saturday, September 19 | 6–9 PM
🎶 Blackwater Grove at 6 PM
💰 FREE
Fort Myers Brewing's new Sundown Concert Series is back Saturday night, and this week's band is Blackwater Grove.
There's live music, food trucks, craft beer and that Florida golden-hour situation we all pretend isn't one of the reasons we tolerate August. 😂
Admission is free.
There is an optional VIP wristband, but you absolutely don't need one to attend.
Why It’s Worth Leaving For: It's an easy Saturday-night plan that doesn't require reservations or a ridiculous cover charge.
Stephanie’s Local Tip: Bring a chair.
Seriously.
The people sitting comfortably with beers will look significantly smarter than you if you don't.
🌧️ Before You Go — We Need to Talk About the Weather
Because it's September in Southwest Florida.
Of course we do.
The National Weather Service currently has Fort Myers around 91° Friday, 90° Saturday and 89° Sunday, with increasing chances for thunderstorms as the weekend goes on.
Friday currently looks like the better weather day. Saturday has showers and thunderstorms expected mainly after about 2 PM, and Sunday has an even higher storm chance. Weather.gov
Translation:
Do not cancel your entire weekend because your weather app has a thunderstorm icon on it.
But DO check the radar before leaving, especially for Captiva and the outdoor Saturday events.
Welcome to September. We make plans and backup plans.
🏆 If I Were Picking Just ONE...
Island Hopper Songwriter Fest on Captiva.
Easy choice this week.
I'd pick a couple of the free performances, head onto Captiva early, use the festival tram and make an afternoon/evening out of it.
It feels local.
It's something different.
And it's exactly the kind of event that makes you remember:
People literally vacation where we live.
That's Worth Leaving For.

Living Here Is More Than Buying a House
It's knowing when downtown is worth heading to.
It's knowing there's a songwriter festival happening on Captiva.
It's knowing when somebody says, “What are we doing this weekend?” and actually having an answer.
That's why every Thursday I dig through what's happening locally and share the things I think are actually Worth Leaving For.
Thinking about making Southwest Florida home?
That's where I come in.
